At Wellness In Infrastructure, we know that improving workplace wellbeing can sometimes feel overwhelming. Companies want to to the right thing, but with so many factors to consider, it’s hard to know where to start. That’s why we love showcasing great initiatives that provide practical, effective solutions, and FSC’s “Occo Kit” is a standout example for the first article in our “Spotlight on Wellness Wins” series.
In the high-pressure world of engineering and construction, extended shifts, night work, and tight deadlines can push workers to their limits. FSC recognised this challenge and took proactive steps to support their people. Through internal analysis, they discovered that 80% of their employees were taking sick leave in the two weeks following an intense work period, known as an occupation or “occo,” due to fatigue, stress, and other health impacts. Rather than accept this as the norm, FSC introduced the “Occo Kit,” a tailored initiative providing engineers with practical tools and resources to navigate these demanding periods while prioritising their wellbeing.
Since launching the Occo Kit, FSC has seen a remarkable reduction in post-occo personal leave, dropping from 80% in the first two weeks after an intense period to just 10%. This dramatic improvement underscores the value of a proactive approach to workplace wellbeing.
Supporting Night Shift Workers. Night shifts present unique physical and mental health challenges. The Occo Kit includes practical tips for managing night work, helping engineers stay focused and healthy. By acknowledging the demands of nocturnal schedules and providing targeted support, FSC is actively working to prevent burnout.
“At FSC, our people are our priority. The Occo Kit was designed with their wellbeing in mind, ensuring that they have the resources and support they need to get through some of the toughest periods of their work. Seeing such a significant reduction in post-occo leave is a testament to how much the kit has improved our team’s overall health and resilience. It’s a great example of how a proactive approach can make a real difference in people’s lives.”
At Wellness in Infrastructure, we believe that sharing success stories like FSC’s Occo Kit can inspire other organisations to take meaningful steps towards employee wellbeing. The wellness space can feel complex, but FSC’s initiative demonstrates that small, targeted actions can have a profound impact. By prioritising safety, mental health, and practical support, FSC has set a powerful example for the industry.
Well done, FSC. This is exactly the kind of leadership we love to see in workplace wellbeing.
