Become a Leader in Industry Wellness
The Psychosocial Audit Tool (P.A.T) has been developed by Wellness in Infrastructure to support infrastructure construction organisations and projects in identifying, assessing, and managing psychosocial hazards in alignment with legislative requirements and industry best practice. Designed for industry, by industry, P.A.T was created in collaboration with key stakeholders who understand the unique challenges of the infrastructure and construction sector. The interactive, web-based tool uses a structured assessment framework and 1–5 rating scale to evaluate organisational systems, controls, and risk management practices, generating practical insights into key risk areas and recommended focus points.
Following extensive pilot testing across real-world infrastructure project sites, P.A.T has now been refined and officially launched to industry. Feedback from pilot participants highlighted the tool’s practical, user-friendly approach and its ability to identify both existing strengths and previously unseen gaps within organisational processes and procedures. The pilot program also demonstrated strong industry demand for a consistent framework and common language around psychosocial safety across projects and organisations.
P.A.T is not a staff culture or engagement survey. It is a professional psychosocial audit tool designed for leaders, project teams, and organisational representatives to assess systems, governance, controls, and compliance obligations. While P.A.T complements and works alongside staff culture surveys, the two tools serve distinctly different purposes. Staff surveys capture employee perceptions, experiences, and sentiment, whereas P.A.T focuses on organisational risk identification, operational practices, and psychosocial compliance. Together, they provide a far more comprehensive understanding of workplace wellbeing and psychosocial safety than either tool could provide independently.
The data and insights generated through P.A.T will help inform broader industry improvements, contributing to safer, healthier, and more sustainable workplaces across the sector. By identifying trends, gaps, and opportunities for improvement, the tool supports evidence-based action planning and helps create a stronger, more proactive approach to psychosocial safety across the Australian infrastructure construction industry. Wellness in Infrastructure’s long-term vision is to help normalise psychosocial safety as an integrated and essential part of everyday work practices, ultimately creating a better industry for everyone.
What are Psychosocial Hazards?
Psychosocial hazards are workplace factors that can impact mental health, wellbeing, and job performance. They can result from how work is designed, managed, or organised, as well as workplace relationships and interactions.
If not identified and managed, these hazards can lead to stress, anxiety, burnout, and other psychological or physical health issues. Understanding psychosocial hazards is an important step in creating a safer and healthier workplace.

National Industry Survey
The Wellness in Infrastructure Mental Health Study will be conducted biennially in collaboration with Professor Luke Downey of Swinburne University. The primary objective of this is to establish a baseline relating the industry’s initiatives to enhance the mental health and wellbeing of professionals within the sector.
In accordance with relevant legislation and AS/NZS ISO 45003:2021, this secure web-based application is currently in development, supported by funding from McConnell Dowell. The tool will assist companies and projects in conducting psychosocial audits using a standardised dataset designed for the high-risk infrastructure construction industry.
