Emperor Penguins are some of the most resilient animals on the planet. That’s why we are naming our next Wellness in Infrastructure mentoring program after them.
Based on the overwhelming success of the 2023 mentoring program, this is a unique opportunity to influence workplace cultural in the infrastructure construction industry.
You will be supporting a cross-industry program, that focuses on sharing personal experience on how to navigate the challenges of the industry and innovative ways to positively shift the wellbeing of the entire sector.
The program supports existing leaders to develop their skills and knowledge as mentors, and to share their lived experiences and wisdom with high potential emerging leaders, who are seeking to develop their own resilience and influencing skills.

Wellness in Infrastructure’s ‘Emperor’ is one of the few programs that takes a whole-of industry approach, pairing mentors and mentees from different organisations in the pursuit of a healthier and pyschosocially safer workplace. The state of wellbeing is recognised as a serious problem across the infrastructure industry.
In 2018, Swinburne University researchers reported that levels of depression, anxiety and stress in the construction industry exceeded Australian population norms by more than 60 percent and were twice that of comparable industries.
This report was an alarm bell, and as the cost of mental health related injuries continues to rise in the Australian construction industry, there was widespread recognition that the issues need to be addressed in a different way.
The findings of the recently released 2023 survey show a small improvement across the country that indicate efforts to improve wellbeing are taking effect but that more needs to be done.
Emperor provides an opportunity to shift workplace culture so employees feel more confident to talk about mental health challenges, knowing they will be heard and influence appropriate action both for themselves and others. Providing our future leaders with skills and tools to help address the identified systemic causes of poor mental health will help to shift the dial on the future of wellness across the infrastructure industry.
The Psychosocial Audit Tool (P.A.T) has been developed to support infrastructure construction organisations and projects in identifying, assessing, and managing psychosocial hazards in alignment with legislative requirements and industry best practice.
What does our future hold when younger generations choose to opt-out of a career in the infrastructure industry? WII’s 2023 Industry Survey revealed young professionals aged 20 – 24 are experiencing severe anxiety at rates three times the norm, so our Young Professionals Group is working hard on initiatives to improve the status quo.
Wellness in Infrastructure’s ongoing partnership with Culture in Construction on the Project Wellbeing Action Plan demonstrates our strong commitment to enhancing wellbeing in the industry.
Change starts with the leaders in our industry, and it is vital to evaluate their knowledge, skills, and motivation to lead this transformation effectively. Led by the Working Group, this initiative seeks to identify and develop educational programs tailored for industry leaders, focusing on the critical areas of mental health and wellbeing.
The Wellness in Infrastructure website serves as a dynamic platform to promote collaboration within the infrastructure construction industry.
The Wellness in Infrastructure Industry Engagement Workshops are conducted subsequent to the National Industry Survey to gather critical insights regarding the factors influencing mental health and wellbeing as reported by professionals within the industry
